Covid 19 Lockdown Update

At present all commercial drone flights other than for emergency or security work have been cancelled. We are not aware of any CAA rulings regarding the private and recreational use of drones.

So long as you can safely operate under private operations rules whilst maintaining the lockdown, social distancing, and preventing the transmission of the virus, the standard private operations rules apply. You are still allowed to use your drone as you normally would, the usual laws apply, nothing has changed in that regard. The main change is that of your freedom of movement, flying in public spaces (parks, flying clubs etc…) is not allowed, flying anywhere other than from your home or property is generally not allowed.

The usual laws still apply, not within 50 meters of a public road, persons or property etcetera, please try to remember these buffer zones at all times. Also be aware that your specific area may have its own set of municipal bylaws. Please at least try to color inside the lines.

IMPORTANT: See here for the relevant drone laws: CAA RPAS Private Operations
IMPORTANT: See here for how these laws are enforced: The Sky police

If you have a garden you may fly around your garden as long as you remain a safe distance from other property and people, if you live in a more rural area, you may fly over your own property.

To the guys sending their drones up to get a photo from their homes, if you do this please keep it low as possible, especially if its overcast, manned aircraft fly lower than usual when its overcast – between the cloud base and the ground – and that means you will be directly in their flight path. Also, even though airtraffic will be less during this period, the airtraffic will constitute more helicopter flights, which fly lower than normal traffic. Please fly lower than anything nearby, with the maximum altitude above ground being 45 meters(150 feet) as usual.

We urge everyone to remain safe during this period and do their best to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 virus. For more information on Covid-19 and coronavirus: www.sacoronavirus.co.za

Unfortunately we are not really in a position at present to be of much help, you may want to contact CUAASA (info@cuaasa.org) as they have a long history in the industry and may be able to put you in touch with the right people. Unfortunately we cannot accomplish much in regards to the Covid-19 pandemic under private operations, but under commercial operations with the help of CUAASA is a very viable option.
